Spotlight On Spices! Issue October 2015 - Allspice - It's a Berry! October 01, 2015 |
Fall's in the air here on the east coast and folk have been working like ants harvesting their gardens, pickling and canning the fruits of their labor --- all in time for October 23's National Canning Day. This month will keep us all busy savoring tasty eats with all of its national food days and various foods being recognized all month long. Here's a sampling:
No Salt Week 1st Week (October 4th - 10th) National Chili Week 1st Week (October 4th - 10th) National Food Bank Week 2nd Week (October 11th - 17th) National School Lunch Week 2nd Week (October 11th - 17th) National Pasta Week 2nd Week (October 11th - 17th) National Dessert Day Second Thursday (October 8th) See below for foods being celebrated all month long.My goddaughter Lauren spent most of her summer in Paris and northern France and now she’s back in that country’s southern regions completing her fall semester. Being in Europe has afforded her many opportunities to tour other countries in close proximity and sample their cuisines. She has already enjoyed several of the foods being celebrated this month (cookies, desserts, pasta, and pizza).
Just last weekend she was in Rome and Florence, and the previous weekend in Munich and Bavaria where she and her friends got a dose of authentic Oktoberfest goodies (ah, the memories of my own visit there twenty-five years ago) and a whirlwind visit to Neuschwanstein castle (the one upon which Cinderella’s Disney World castle is modeled.) I told Lauren how I hiked up to the castle perched upon a high hill surrounded by woods. Alas! I have not made it over, yet, to France for a visit. But I’ve been enjoying Lauren’s food photos. 
French Macaroons will entice the cookie lover in each of us to celebrate all month long both National Cookie Month and National Dessert Month. 
There are a lot of different foods and special food days being highlighted this month, and there’s one spice that can be used for many different recipes, whether sweet or savory. Many of your dessert, pickling and beverage (mulled cider or wine) recipes will call for October’s . . . . THE SPICE OF LIFE - Allspice - It's a Berry!
Allspice - Jamaica Pepper is also known as Myrtle Pepper. This spice is a berry from an evergreen tree. It is not a combination of spices which many people believe it to be. Its name describes its flavor which is like a combination of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
Often, Allspice is used as a baking spice for cakes and muffins. However, it is a primarily ingredient in savory blends like Pickling Spices, and can be used to flavor a host of foods like: beans, chicken, lentils, pork, squash … learn more >>>
